A new king is crowned in the United Kingdom, in Germany Henry XIII Prince Reuss reaches for power and series like "The Crown" are booming on Netflix. In many places, the aristocracy has been abolished, but the royals are not easily defeated. We also encounter royalty in the classical theater canon - from Richard III to King Charles, there is a fascination with the world of nobility. They are part of pop culture and social debates, and their popularity ratings are high. Yet the history of nobility is above all a history of domination and violence, of exploitation and oppression. So where does the longing for palace, pomp and privilege - for a parallel world beyond democracy - come from? In "Royals", a royal family engages in light-hearted discourse - and the next coronation is just around the corner.
