In the fall of 1961, the mayor of a small village in the Thuringian border region accidentally learns of a secret plan to forcibly relocate all the inhabitants. In a risky operation, 53 people decide to risk the dangerous border crossing to the West. But not everyone is prepared to flee and tensions in the village escalate.
