Beautiful to weep to

Few works express the human struggle in the face of mortality between hope and despair, light and shadow as movingly as the "German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms. With an individual selection of biblical passages, the composer created a thoroughly personal promise of consolation, which he said he would have preferred to call "human" rather than "German". The Staatskapelle Berlin will be conducted by Christian Thielemann, a "gilder of sound" (Hamburger Abendblatt).
