Introduction and moderation: Prof. Dr. Frank Bösch, Director of the ZZF

The German-American historian Konrad H. Jarausch was co-director of the Center for Contemporary History in Potsdam during a central phase from 1998-2006. At the ZZF, he is now presenting his recently published autobiography, published by "Vergangenheitsverlag". It describes the academic life of a transatlantic historian who has researched and experienced German history from the dual perspective of the Federal Republic and the United States. Born as a child of the war, raised in West Germany and educated in the USA, he taught as an endowed professor at the University of North Carolina, but was also regularly active as a visiting professor and publicist in his old homeland. He provided many new impulses in the study of history, especially from the ZZF Potsdam in the examination of the East German past. He highlights the lessons to be learned from German and European history in order to defend liberal, social and democratic values against the populist challenges of the present. At the same time, the book conveys how topics and discourses are linked to the biographies of their protagonists - and how much the current political situation in the USA under Donald Trump is also changing perspectives on the transatlantic past.
