Early summer, end of the eighties. Volker Winterberg has ended his dream of bohemian life in Berlin and his community service. Now he is back home in the Ruhr region, doing his time in seminars at university, taking part in writing courses and helping out at the theater. But his hunger for the essence of life and art remains unsatisfied. Every evening he sees the plays of the greats on the theater stage, makes friends with theater people and, above all, worships the great Traugott Buhre.

But instead of making progress, the past catches up with him: his brief Berlin affair announces her visit and causes the indecisive Volker enormous embarrassment. In line with the motto: "You only had to be born in the right part of the world to lead a good life in the wrong part", he then decides to break out together with his friend Leo and travel through outer and inner continents: they travel south without a fixed plan, and finally end up in the unknown expanses of officially still socialist Hungary. After an adventurous border crossing without a visa, they find themselves in a completely new world.
