Published in May 2025, this book is the first comprehensive introduction to Ukrainian studies in German. It deals with the past and present of Ukraine from a comparative perspective. The most important problems of Ukrainian history and politics as well as literature, media, languages and confessional issues are introduced in a clear and comprehensible way. The book is a synthesis of international research, but also the result of the author's own research and teaching experience throughout Europe. The volume is aimed at students and teachers of Ukrainian and Eastern European studies, Slavic studies as well as journalists, politicians and anyone interested in Eastern Europe.

Prof. Dr. Andrii Portnow, born in 1979 in what is now Dnipro, studied history in Dnipor and Warsaw. He has taught in Lviv, Trier, Amsterdam, Kyiv, Paris and Berlin, among other places. Since 2018, he has been Professor of Entangled History of Ukraine at the European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder). As an internationally recognized expert on the history and culture of Ukraine, he has published over 200 articles in specialist journals and daily newspapers. His articles have been translated into several languages.

Due to the brutal Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, millions of Ukrainians are on the run, bringing their families, their history, language and culture with them, which are little or not at all known in Western Europe. In the event series "Ukraine is here", renowned Ukrainian authors, academics and cultural workers will have their say. They will present the history, culture and language of Ukraine.
