On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the flag of the "Mayors for Peace" initiative will fly in Dortmund - as in over 8,000 cities worldwide. With this highly visible symbol, the city of Dortmund is once again making a clear, impressive and unmistakable commitment to the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

The so-called Flag Day is far more than a symbolic gesture: it stands for a global commitment to humanity, disarmament and a future without nuclear threats. The international initiative was launched in 1982 by the mayor of the city of Hiroshima - driven by historical awareness and looking to the future.

Dortmund was one of the first German cities to join the alliance back in 1985. Today, over 800 municipalities in Germany alone are actively involved in Mayors for Peace - and the number is growing all the time.

In cooperation with the City of Dortmund, the German-Japanese Society and IPPNW Dortmund (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War), the flag will be raised at central locations in Dortmund on July 8, 2025 - as a visible sign of peace, global responsibility and a world free of nuclear weapons.
