A severe famine threatens the family of a poor woodcutter. He can no longer earn the daily bread for his family and is therefore persuaded by his wife to abandon the two children, Hansel and Gretel, in the forest.
The first attempt fails because Hansel overhears his parents' plan and puts white pebbles in his pockets. He secretly scatters them as he and Gretel are led into the forest by their parents so that they can easily find their way back later. The father is delighted that the children are back home, but his wife persuades him to get rid of them again. Hansel does not get the chance to collect pebbles. Instead, he scatters breadcrumbs, which are pecked away by the birds. Now they are all alone in the forest and can't find their way back. Wandering around, they come across a house made entirely of bread, cake and confectionery. Hansel and Gretel satisfy their hunger when it suddenly calls out: "Crunchy, crunchy, crunchy, who's crunching on my little house?"
For children aged 4 and over
