After the successful musical "Oklahoma!", composer Richard Rodgers and songwriter Oscar Hammerstein based their new musical - first performed on Broadway in 1945 - on Molnár's play "Liliom" and relocated the setting to the American East Coast. The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow. When he and his pregnant girlfriend, the young worker Julie Jordan, lose their jobs, he becomes involved in a robbery that goes tragically wrong. But then he is given the chance to do something good after all ... And at the end of the almost fairytale-like story is a star that lights the way to a positive future for a previously unhappy girl.
By far the most famous song from the musical is "You'll Never Walk Alone", which has become a worldwide soccer anthem - what could be more fitting for the soccer city of Leverkusen!
