Is it jazz, musical or opera? The American music of the early 20th century, influenced by exiles, defies clear categories. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe has selected arias with a rousing Broadway flair - perfect for the radiant voice of South African soprano Golda Schultz, whose career is currently soaring at the world's most important opera houses. Stravinsky, Korngold and Weill, themselves immigrants, meet Gershwin and Bernstein, descendants of the second generation of immigrants. Their music unites the pain of uprooting with the courage to make a new start. This contrasts with Beethoven's concise, humorous Symphony No. 8, with which the Chamber Orchestra of Europe once again proves its class as a Beethoven ensemble.
