You'd have to look a long time to discover a similarly artistically active old man's work: 87-year-old Charles Lloyd not only seems to be reaping the rewards of a long life as a musician, but also sowing the seeds of completely new ideas. Ten new albums have been released in the last few years alone, with Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Zakir Hussain and Lucinda Williams. None of them breathe the stale spirit of nostalgia. Lloyd, who has been moving between blues, avant-garde, hard bop and rock as a saxophonist, flautist and composer since the 1950s, has one of the richest vocabularies among jazz musicians. His top-class current quartet provides him with a foundation on which he can fuse the most sublime melody lines, the most subtle changes, the most spiritual experiences and the most complex emotions with his warm, old-masterly tone. "The Sky Will Be There Tomorrow", released on Blue Note in 2024, is a message of good tidings in desolate times, and Lloyd is the "storyteller" he always wanted to be with his music.
