Choreia, the latest project by the CocoonDance Company, searches for the lost space of community. In order to dissolve existing divisions such as those between stage and auditorium, choral forms of body, space and sound from folklore, ballet and ancient comedy are used, which have the power to overcome physical distance. The organ of the voice, which can touch and move over great distances, is indispensable here.
The original Greek word choreia refers to the practice of singing, speaking and dancing as equals in a chorus of citizens, and so the current play Choreia also gives voice back to the art of dance, which has become mute. With its help, Choreia invites us to imagine other embodiments and to connect with other bodies.
In doing so, the production explores both the power of unanimity and that of polyphony, which arises from differences and deviations in the sense of a polyphonic aesthetic. Community is not conceived in terms of unity, a "merging community" (Jean-Luc Nancy), but in terms of the differences between singular individuals.
