CHORWERK RUHR: Die Nachtigall

In cooperation with the Zollverein Foundation, CHORWERK RUHR presents the famous fairy tale about the power and powerlessness of music under the direction of Katrin Sedlbauer together with Michala Petri (flute), Jonathan Schimmer (narrator) and Essen schoolchildren as an exciting, moving piece of music theater for everyone aged eight and over.

A nightingale becomes the star of the court - when she sings, everyone melts away. This is the story told by Latvian composer Úgis Praulins in his musical adaptation of Hans Chr. Andersen's fairy tale "The Nightingale", in which a recorder player flutters through the action as a chirping bird alongside a dazzlingly expressive chamber choir, while the narrator tells of the emperor who - caught up in his technological euphoria - one day swaps his beloved nightingale of flesh and blood for a technically flawless but ultimately lifeless music box. The initial enthusiasm for the glittering metallic wind-up bird ends in mortal fear: the emperor falls seriously ill and no one can help him - no one except the "real" nightingale ...
