Even if the term should be used with caution, Tom Astor has been Germany's first country music superstar since 1995 at the latest. His impressive track record, which is also unique in Europe's country music scene, has ensured that country music has found a whole new audience. The likeable, audience-oriented star has fans of all ages. In 2013, he celebrated his 50th anniversary on stage.
His first country album was released in 1980, and one year later Tom Astor performed at the legendary FAN-FAIR, one of the most important events in country music, in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1984, he made his breakthrough in Germany with "Hallo, guten Morgen Deutschland", which had already become a long-running hit. And then began a unique rise to become a popular figure and audience favorite. Since then, Tom Astor has received almost every award that country music has to offer. Tom Astor has always built a bridge between German and US country music. He has long since become a fixture in the country mecca of Nashville. If proof were needed that country music can be stylistically authentic and successful in German, Tom Astor is here to prove it again. His path has taken him far beyond the country music scene. Tom Astor has become a household name in entertainment music: he has been a guest on almost every major TV show. Tom Astor is well on his way to becoming as much of a legend as those with whom he has already shared the stage.
Career highlights include not only his guest appearance in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1983 at the International Country Gala and his acclaimed performances at the Nürburgring Festival in front of more than 70,000 spectators, but also his appearances with highwaymen Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. He was the first German singer to perform at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, the historic concert hall in Nashville that is reserved for the greats of country music in the same way that the New York Met is reserved for the best opera singers. Tom Astor brought his music to circles that until then had not been interested in country music. There were plenty of great successes to celebrate:
1st place in the ZDF annual hit parade with "Flieg junger Adler"
3 x 1st place in the ARD TV program "Deutsche Schlagerparade"
Golden Tuning Fork 1994
4 x the "Golden Truck" of the magazine "Trukker" and "Auto Bild"
9 x Singer of the Year at the GACMF Gala (German American Country Music Federation)
He was the first country artist ever to win gold in Germany for 250,000 records sold - three times. His songs "Flieg junger Adler", "Hallo Freunde", "Kameraden der Straße", among others, have sold a total of 4 million records to date!
The album "Milestones" with 20 duets is a measure of his international standing. Legendary US country greats such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Don Williams, Emmylou Harris, Dave Dudley and The Bellamy Brothers were immediately willing to go into the studio with the German superstar for this CD. In February 1996, the eternally popular "Man in black" - Jonny Cash - was delighted to record two tracks with his friend from Germany. He has also sung duets with John Denver and the German superstar Wolfgang Petry.
