Christine Weiland: Mein grünes Glück – Ackern auf dem Biohof (Lesung)

There are moments in life when a person simply has to get out. In such a situation, it was clear to Christine Weiland that three weeks of rehab would not be enough to restore her inner balance, that pilgrimages should be left to the faithful and that climbing the Himalayas at the age of 60 with an ailing hip was not a good idea. The solution was "Wwoof" (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms). This is an organization through which you can work on over 550 organic farms throughout Germany in exchange for board and lodging. As a fan of organic food, Christine had wanted to try this out in previous years, but it had never worked out in terms of time or finances. It's mainly young people who are taking time out after school or looking for career guidance who do this.

At 60, Christine Weiland goes to her first farm to change her mind after a bereavement. There she learns to rear bottle-fed lambs, milk sheep and make cheese. The work is so interesting that she wants to do more. The second farm is a vegetable farm in Western Pomerania, where cold-blooded horses are used for tilling and produce is sold at the weekly market. Here, the farm lives in harmony with nature, completely without artificial fertilizers and chemicals. Even 20 hectares are enough to feed a family and not 2000, which is quite common on conventional farms.

Christine now packs her suitcase again and again to get to know the organic sector in all its diversity. This has resulted in a trip to 13 farms in Germany - from goat farms and pig farmers to organic beekeepers and winegrowers. She learns a lot and also makes a lot of mistakes. Then the pigs literally bite her. It's good when a cow shows patience when you try to milk it by hand. And why should you paint fruit trees with the droppings of sheep?

She also met people who produce their products with passion and heart and soul and, in most cases, are also wonderful hosts. They were always amazed that a woman, shortly before retirement and from a completely different professional background, would come to the farms to lend a hand. An amusing foray through grassland with the realization that organic farming is the only sensible way to provide us with healthy food from healthy soil in the future.
