DEPOT 1 - 1 hr 30 min - No intermission
Four siblings, gathered at their father's deathbed. Having once made his fortune with a global shipping company and been widely respected as a generous philanthropist, he has spent the last few years in prison, socially ostracized and insolvent after it became known that his company had been involved in illegal arms deals. But is there really nothing left of his former fortune? When the appearance of an unexpected guest forces the siblings to acknowledge their interests and values, old loyalties are called into question. And there is no escape: while the four of them come to terms with their family history in the comfort of their villa, the world around them is thrown into chaos. Who or what will they betray first?
What complex feelings arise when we bear witness to a catastrophe? How do we navigate the space between observer and participant? Does the act of observing implicate us in something, or does it absolve us of responsibility?
Together with changing collaborators and long-time companions, Israeli director Yael Ronen has been providing the German-speaking theater landscape with extraordinarily pointed observations of what is heatedly discussed or vigorously suppressed in public debates for more than 15 years. This results in contemporary theater evenings with great empathy, never without humor and always with a special feel for the balance between lightness and depth. The visually stunning thriller COLLATERAL DAMAGE is the first of her works to be shown at Schauspiel Köln.
