Cologne Jazzweek: Kurt Rosenwinkel Trio

In the organizer's words:

Since he emerged on the scene in the early 1990s, Kurt Rosenwinkel has been one of the most important innovators in jazz. He has developed a sound aesthetic for his instrument with which he has fundamentally changed the jazz guitar. With his trio with Gregory Hutchinson (drums) and Dario Deidda (bass guitar), Rosenwinkel once again picks up on a thread that he began to weave 16 years ago. As back then, he combines original compositions with jazz standards - such as "Ugly Beaty" by Monk or "Self Portrait In Three Colors" by Mingus - playing some as if they had long since become classics and others as if he had just put them down on paper. These songs are brought to life by the interplay between the three of them at eye level, when Hutchinson and Deidda shake their rhythmic foundations, while Rosenwinkel throws shimmering garlands far out into the tonal space with his guitar, which swirl in waves over the chords to surround them with intense sound and crisp elegance, as if they wanted to protect them.
