Cologne Jazzweek: Laura Jurd

Regardless of whether young British musician Laura Jurd comes from jazz or rock, orchestral new music or archaic folklore, her music is a multi-layered hybrid that is often aesthetically and stylistically heterogeneous. The trumpeter and composer is concerned with the authentic and individual in her music; she is also interested in giving the musicians in her various large ensembles the opportunity to reveal their own identity with their own personal expression. Recently, Jurd has discovered even more of her love for traditional music and folklore when she formed Trio Lau with Irish fiddle player Ultan O'Brien and her compatriot Martin Green on accordion. With her new quartet, she goes one step further. The dynamic guitar and drums tandem with Tara Cunningham and Corrie Dick becomes the basis for an imaginary folklore that enables her on trumpet and Cori Smith on viola to play across different musical genres as a matter of course.
