Let's celebrate indie pop! After the sold-out weekend last April, Cologne Popfest is coming back to Gebäude 9: Indie Pop, Twee Pop, Jangle Pop, C86!
Stuart Murdoch (Glasgow)
Stuart Murdoch last played with Belle & Sebastian at Gloria in the summer after a long break from Cologne. His debut novel Nobody's Empire (named after a B&S song) was then published in the fall. Stuart will be reading from the novel on Saturday afternoon, answering questions and, of course, playing songs from his band. We've seen videos of the recently completed reading tour in the USA and have been looking forward to his visit even more ever since.
Fear Of Men (Brighton)
When Robert Smith personally invites your band to a festival curated by him, everyone should be talking about it. Despite two fantastic albums, Fear Of Men are still an insider tip, which will hopefully change with their soon to be released third album. The concert at Gebäude 9 will be their first since their appearance at Robert Smith's Meltdown Festival 2018, and anyone who has seen Fear Of Men before knows how good it will be.
Allo Darlin' (Australia / England)
After Allo Darlin' celebrated a sold-out return in London after a long break, the indie pop darlings are coming to Europe exclusively for Cologne Popfest. Allo Darlin' are releasing their fourth album in 2025. The performance by the band, whose members live in Australia, England and Norway, will be their first in Cologne since 2014.
Prolapse (Leicester)
Prolapse are one of those bands that should be so much bigger in a fairer music world. John Peel's love for their music shows what a gem the seven-piece group from Leicester are. The band, whose releases include Cherry Red Records, have played several Peel sessions and appeared twice on the radio legend's 1997 Festive Fifty. Prolapse's performance will be their second concert in Germany, their first in decades.
The Simple Present (Stuttgart)
Even though wonderful new indie pop bands emerge in Germany from time to time, it's mainly around the fantastic Augsburg DIY label Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. The label's latest discovery is The Simple Present, a jangle pop group from Stuttgart, whose very first concert we saw in November. Their first EP will be released by KUS in 2025.
