CONCERT & FILM VOL. 2: SISTERS

PICK OF THE DAY Concerts & Music
In the organizer's words:

In a frenzy of sounds and images

Julia Wolfe: "Cruel Sister" (2004) for string orchestra & Vera Chytylova: "Tausendschönchen - kein Märchen" (1966)

ensemble distr.action'snew program SISTERS illuminates the concept of sisterhood from different perspectives, which can stand for rivalry and resentment as well as solidarity, care and tenderness. Influences from centuries-old fairytale traditions as well as current feminist and pop-cultural discourses are juxtaposed in a performative concert. Two works will be presented that tell of relationships between two young women - and could not be more different.

"Cruel Sister" by Julia Wolfe is based on a ballad from the 17th century: Two sisters vie for the favor of the same man, whereupon the older one pushes the younger one into the sea. A harp is made from her mortal remains, which sings about the murder at the older sister's wedding.

Vera Chytilova's film "Tausendschönchen - kein Märchen" strikes a completely different chord: Here, every convention is gleefully shattered. The decision of two Maries to be just as depraved as the world itself results in an explosion of stubbornness and experimentation, a humorous and pleasurable play interspersed with existential questions and the deconstruction of the double standards of Czechoslovakia at the time.

Between autobiography and utopia, minimal music and Czech avant-garde cinema, the origins of female division are exposed and deconstructed in a powerful plea for a new social structure.music & performance: ensemble distr.action

ensemble distr.action are professionally trained string players who have extensive experience in playing chamber music and orchestras and who, in addition to making music, also organize and design their own programmes. The ensemble is united by a common interest in alternative structures in the classical music scene, in collaborative creative processes in the design of projects and in the opportunity to reflect on socio-political issues through music and art. The collective primarily performs in alternative concert venues and formats and is always looking for interdisciplinary points of contact.
