Connecting Roots: Collective Stories, Individual Identities

In the organizer's words:

For 20 years, the ifa - Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen has been sustainably strengthening civil society networks between Germany and the world with its CrossCulture program. Over 1,100 alumni:ae from all over the world are united by their commitment to positive change. The polyphonic exhibition "Connecting Roots: Collective Stories, Individual Identities" celebrates two decades of exchange with scholarship holders, artists and partner organizations worldwide and explores global perspectives on remembrance in the ifa Gallery Stuttgart from 31 July 2025.

14 international artists, selected by the curator duo Elham Khattab (Director of Out of the Circle, Egypt) and Omar Chennafi (Morocco as co-curator), will show works and contributions in"Connecting Roots: Collective Stories, Individual Identities" that revolve around the themes of memory and identity, collective healing, the environment and future-oriented remembrance: How can we as individuals with our respective roots become a community that celebrates difference? How can we use memory on the path to a more inclusive future?

The artists from ten countries, including Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Morocco and Tunisia, address these issues with photographs, installations, video, sound, performances and workshops. The exhibition presents art as a language for transcultural dialog - and combines personal roots with collective remembrance.
