It sounds like a modern romantic comedy: two couples have to separate and young love is put to the test thanks to a cynical string-puller in mixed-up constellations. The ingredients of this love drama seem simple at first, but the deception, confusion and lies - to others and to oneself - are grotesque, funny and cruel all at the same time.
Così fan tutte is one of the most finely observed psychological chamber plays in music history. Mozart and Da Ponte provide a congenial harmony of music and text that was far ahead of its time and only developed its full effect on audiences in the 20th century. In Trier, after Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, the opera concludes our trilogy of Mozart's Da Ponte operas.
