Two composers, two eras, one common foundation: faith. Olivier Messiaen's "Les offrandes oubliées" from 1930 is dedicated to the cross, sin and the Last Supper and is an impressive testimony to Catholic mysticism. The three movements of this early work bear programmatic titles that illustrate Messiaen's spiritual vision: "The Crucifixion", "Sin" and "The Eucharist". The music moves between expressive drama and contemplative stillness, making the composer's deep faith palpable. Anton Bruckner's "5th Symphony", the centerpiece of the evening, is known as the "Symphony of Faith" and is considered one of his most monumental works. With sacred depth and contrapuntal mastery, Bruckner unfolds an 80-minute arc of tension in four movements, culminating in a grandiose double fugue.
After Mahler's symphonies, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen under the baton of General Music Director Rasmus Baumann presents another giant of orchestral literature at the Ruhr Festival this year.
