Spain around 1975, the last days of the Franco dictatorship. When eight-year-old Ana's mother dies, the child blames her unfaithful father, an officer. Ana takes refuge in daydreams in which she has power over life and death. T he image of a lazy Madrid patrician family, frozen to the core, is seen as Saura's metaphor for the military regime still active at the time of filming. The director deals with the bitter themes with poisonous humor and poetic fantasy. It is the second film in the series to feature Ana Torrent as a child actress and, as in The Spirit of the Beehive, turns her into a metaphor for the leaden times of the last Franco years and their flight movements.
