To kick off the last BRITNEY X Festival, we are welcoming the French-Austrian multimedia artist Gisèle Vienne to Cologne for the first time. A puppeteer and philosopher by training, she is a master of staging mental abysses. In CROWD, together with author Dennis Cooper, she reveals the emotional worlds of a party crowd that gradually fills the stage space. Slow motion and tableaux vivants are used to coolly and precisely dissect the revelers as they dissolve into ecstasy. Inspired by metropolitan club culture, techno and punk, the result is an image somewhere between dream and reality. In the wake of the rave culture of the 1990s, CROWD brings our linear perception of time to a standstill: movement and image begin to overlap, the visual and auditory experience tears open and yet: the pulse remains. Premiered in 2017 and on tour worldwide ever since, CROWD allows us to participate in a magical and formally highly stylized reflection on community, encounter, intimacy, threat and liberation in an overwhelming way.
