It seems almost symbolic that Dan Mangan is making such an exclamation mark now, of all times, in this mature phase of his life and work. Natural Light reads like a musical diary whose pages are interspersed with the various chapters of his career. There are still traces of the young, unwavering musician who put together his European tours via Myspace in the mid-2000s. The burgeoning songwriter who withdrew when folk suddenly forced its way into the arenas - and instead became involved with his family. The stylistic border crosser who pushes open new doors with every album, never repeats himself and always goes a little further than you would have expected.

For over twenty years, Mangan has lived an impressively steadfast creative ethic - and over the years, not only his voice but also his artistic integrity has grown. Natural Light unfolds as an alternative to today's playlist logic: a coherent album that takes its time, cultivates transitions and loves nuances.
