Concept and choreography: Omar Rajeh
Omar Rajeh is one of the most important figures in contemporary dance from the Arabic-speaking world and now lives in Lyon. His works are deeply rooted in social and political themes and consciously transcend conventional boundaries. He opened the Ruhrfestspiele in 2019 with his production "Beytna", which celebrated dance and hospitality.
In his solo "Dance is not for us", Rajeh takes the audience on a journey into his autobiographical universe. Memories, longings and traumas interweave with the complex reality of his home country Lebanon.
The title "Dance is not for us" is both an ironic observation and a political statement. Rajeh makes the pain and chaos experienced by the people of his homeland palpable. But he also shows that dance is a means of resistance - a rebellion against power structures that want to control and silence bodies. Despite the tragedy and sadness, hope always shines through his work: a commitment to the warmth, hospitality and humanity of Lebanon. Rajeh's dance thus becomes a powerful expression of resistance and hope for freedom.
