Daniel Kahn und Christian Dawid: neue und alte jiddische Lieder

Daniel Kahn, the Detroit-born Yiddish troubadour, meets his longtime companion, the legendary Berlin klezmer multi-instrumentalist Christian Dawid. They will perform an intimate evening of new and old songs, smuggled across the borders of Yiddish and English. The musicians present a contemporary collection of brittle ballads, klezmer and revolutionary hymns - from the tradition of bards such as Gebirtig, Waits, Guthrie, Schaechter-Gottesman, Cohen and Kahn himself.

The HanseShtetl in the Goldbekhaus will once again be presenting concerts and sessions in 2025.

Musicians from the HanseShtetl in Hamburg invite friends from the Yiddish scene to duo concerts and sessions. With a total of four duo concerts, the HanseShtetl will showcase the diversity of Yiddish music. This is because artists from Hamburg are part of the international music scene and are networked in the Global Yiddish Shtetl.

The duo concerts are always on Saturdays and on the following Sunday the artists lead the klezmer sessions in the Goldbekhaus with an open stage for everyone (Sunday, May 18, 3 - 5 pm).

Daniel Kahn (vocals, forest zither, accordion, piano) studied theater and poetry at the University of Michigan. He moved to Berlin in 2005 and founded his band "The Painted Bird", with which he produced five albums that received numerous awards. In 2018 he received the Chane and Joseph Mlotek Award for Yiddish Continuity in the USA, and in 2023 the Dreaming in Yiddish Award in New York. He works at the Maxim Gorki Theater and the Thalia Theater as a director, author, actor, composer and musician.

Christian Dawid (clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone) is a well-traveled and internationally sought-after clarinettist. He is classically trained, has absorbed and performed dozens of styles between jazz and alpine brass music and specializes in Yiddish and Eastern European folk music. Dawid is also a sought-after lecturer for Yiddish music and teaches at many international festivals and seminars, such as Yiddish Summer Weimar, KlezKanada and KlezKamp. He composes, arranges and lives in Berlin
