New York insurance clerk C.C. Baxter is promoted twice in a very short space of time. The key to his success is the key to his apartment, which he makes available by the hour to his superiors and their respective affairs. But his opportunism is put to the test when he experiences the consequences of double standards and hypocrisy. What it means to become a human being has rarely been staged with such bitter humor as in Billy Wilder's reckoning with American capitalism.
