Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari

With his new project, music icon and Kraftwerk legend Karl Bartos is dedicating himself to another style-defining work of art: Robert Wiene's 1920 silent film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is considered an expressionist masterpiece and, incidentally, the first psychological thriller in film history. Bartos has invented an acoustic code for this more than 100-year-old work of cinematic art that translates it into the here and now. Bartos' film score transforms the centuries-spanning sound of a symphony orchestra into electronics, including a sound architecture that uses the sounds and noises of the narrated world and musicalized language to abolish the separation of image and sound due to the times.

Now Karl Bartos and his musical partner, sound director Mathias Black, are bringing "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" live to concert halls and cinemas with his film score in the 4K version restored by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation in 2014. The premiere at the Alte Oper Frankfurt in February 2024 was met with enthusiasm by audiences and press alike.
