After an accident, sensational photographer Jeffries is confined to a wheelchair. Apart from the occasional visits from his fiancée, his only daily activity is to look out of the window into a backyard. Stories emerge from the - naturally indiscreet - glimpses into the windows of the apartments opposite. A man composes a piece of music, a couple honeymoon. Another man begins to behave strangely. Slowly, a suspicion arises in the observer, who is condemned to inactivity. A murder may have taken place [...] With the exception of a single scene, the camera stays with James Stewart. [...] A very exciting, dramaturgically sophisticated film without shock effects. One of Hitchcock's stylistically clearest and most original films, full of breathless suspense, because the viewer soon realizes that Jeffries' situation is similar to his own. (filmdienst.de)
