DAS GROßE UND DAS KLEINE TOHUWABOHU (Wilhelm Hein)

In the organizer's words:

Wilhelm Hein, one of the forefathers of underground and avant-garde film, has created an opus magnum: "das Große und das Kleine Tohuwabohu". It was created between 1995 and 2018 and comprises 100 films, each lasting one hour. In order to make it possible to experience the time frame in which it was created, Arsenal is showing reel 1 and reel 96 on this evening.

Half a century ago, in 1974, Wilhelm Hein spoke in a discussion during the Berlinale Forum at the Delphi about the potential of experimental film and the difficulties of giving it a place in the film landscape. "das Große und das Kleine Tohuwabohu" is, in his words, "the renewed attempt to show what subversive avant-garde cinema is capable of." His promise: "GUARANTEE FOR THE PUBLIC: NOT ANOTHER BORING AVANTGARDE SCHROTT."
