Das Kapital: Das Musical

"Marx the theater! Marx it! Marx it! Marx it off!" (Theater der Zeit)

Money - hardly anything is talked about more in view of inflation, increased energy costs and tight public coffers. Apparently it can't be done without it, but where is it supposed to come from? Where does it go? What happens in between? And what do art and capital have to do with each other? The question of financing art and culture becomes very concrete in Das Kapital: Das Musical: Marx's Das Kapital is to be performed. But how without sufficient funding? So the theater troupe sets out to raise the necessary capital - but the path is marked by obstacles and detours and leads to serious personal and ideological conflicts within the group. Or is the way to the capital already the goal?

A comedy that is as entertaining as it is bitterly wicked about the laws of unleashed (financial) capitalism and the question of what actually constitutes "value". Sounds complicated? On the contrary! You'll never have understood capitalism so well - earworms included.

Director Kieran Joel studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" Berlin and has staged productions at the Volkstheater Munich, the Konzert Theater Bern, the Staatstheater Nürnberg, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Theater im Bauturm Cologne, among others. His successful interpretation of Cervantes' Don Quixote has been running there since November 2017, and was awarded the Cologne Theater Prize in December 2018. In the 2021/22 season, Kieran Joel staged the world premiere of Mithu Sanyal's novel Identitti at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus. His works playfully, accessibly, and humorously explore the relationship between theater and reality, fact and fiction, identity and (social) roles, and time and again make theater an equally clever and entertaining pleasure. With Das Kapital: Das Musical he presents himself to the Dortmund audience for the first time.
