Poland, winter 1943: The wife of a woodcutter discovers a baby in the snow one day, not far from the railroad tracks. In an act of desperation, the child has been thrown from a moving death train on its way to Auschwitz. Without thinking of the impending consequences, the childless woman takes the girl into her care despite her abject poverty. This child, the most precious of all possessions, not only fundamentally changes the couple's lives, but also those of the people whose paths it crosses. Some of them risk everything to protect the girl, revealing the best and worst in people. "The Most Precious of Goods" is the big screen adaptation by Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius ("The Artist"), based on the bestseller of the same name by renowned French playwright and children's book author Jean-Claude Grumberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hazanavicius. Oscar-winner Alexandre Desplat composed the film music; the magnificent animations are based on Hazanavicius' drawings. In the German-language version, Jürgen Prochnow ("Das Boot", "The English Patient") provides the voice of the narrator. In the official selection for the competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, "The Most Precious of All Goods" was the emotional finale.
