Tim Engels (Lars Eidinger) lives in Berlin with his wife Milena (Nicolette Krebitz) and their teenage children Jon (Julius Gause) and Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer). In addition to the twins, Milena's son Dio (Elyas Eldridge) is also part of the family. However, the Engels are a long way from a loving, balanced life together: although they all live under the same roof, they tend to live side by side and rarely have any in-depth overlaps in their everyday lives. Only when the Syrian immigrant Farrah (Tala al Deen) is hired as a housekeeper does something change in the family's pure co-existence...

Tom Tykwer paints a portrait of a family caught between collapse and new beginnings and deals with the big issues of our time in a world that is reeling.
