How can a dance of self-defense be created? Without the use of sound, the audience is placed around the Brazilian artists Davi Pontes & Wallace Ferreira . Based on the observation that the state and institutions secure order through violence, Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira present a precise and virtuoso choreography using martial arts and capoeira. In doing so, they critically examine dance history: with the Repertório trilogy, they explore movement in the field of black aesthetics. Black aesthetics refers to an artistic and cultural mode of expression that focuses on and celebrates the experiences, perspectives and identities of Black people. Black aesthetics is closely linked to the history, social struggles and cultural achievements of the African diaspora. It is about questioning stereotypical representations and offering an alternative, self-determined perspective. Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira use imitation and rhythmic patterns to expand the perception of time and space.
Repertório N.2 is the second piece in the choreographic trilogy by Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira. Using unconventional techniques, they draw on an alternative, subterranean tradition of self-defense practices. Through their choreographies, they undertake a critical reflection of the world they live in and engage in a choreographic process that thwarts imagination and intuition. Their aim is to free themselves from any constraints and to confront the colonial, racist and patriarchal framework of Western thought. For an in-depth insight into the long-term work of Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira, we recommend an additional visit to Repertório N.3.
