Demokratie vor Ort: Resonanz-Raum-Ausstellung

In the organizer's words:

The traveling exhibition "Demokratie vor Ort: Resonanz-Raum-Ausstellung" is a cooperation project between the Hamburg State Center for Political Education and the Public History Department of the University of Hamburg, funded by the foundation "Orte der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte".

In 2022/2024, the "Places of (In)Visibility" succeeded in making the stories of people who came to the Hanseatic city from the GDR visible to a broad public, but above all to young people in Hamburg. Central to this are the stories and experiences of contemporary witnesses, which converge at specific places of local memory and become part of the city's history. Specific questions about arriving in a democracy against the backdrop of experiences of dictatorship also play a role here, as does acceptance in a new society. The project "Demokratie vor Ort: Resonanz-Raum-Ausstellung" (Local Democracy: Resonance Space Exhibition) now sheds more light on these initial findings from the project "Orte der (Un-)Sichtbarkeit" (Places of (In)Visibility) in a traveling exhibition, focusing on the history(ies) of democracy in the here and now.

Three audio stations and contextualizing panels on flight and arrival in Hamburg are on display. At the heart of the exhibition is a participatory element that invites visitors to position themselves on central questions of democracy and freedom, especially against the backdrop of the stories of the SED dictatorship and GDR injustice. This gives visitors the opportunity to make their own voice visible and thus become an active part of the traveling exhibition.

The audio walk from the predecessor project "Places of (in)visibility" is of course still available. You can find it on the website www.orte-der-unsichtbarkeit.de.

A finissage as well as guided tours by the curator and workshops are planned, as is the open discussion format in the exhibition "In conversation with ...". The respective dates can be found at http://demokratie-hamburg.blogs.uni-hamburg.de/#termine.
