"The destruction of Nazism and its roots is our slogan. The construction of a new world of peace and freedom is our goal!" This is how the surviving inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp formulated their maxim in April 1945 immediately after (self-)liberation.
"May 8, 2025 marks the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of Europe. Survivors of the extermination and concentration camps, deserters, resistance fighters and other anti-fascists have given first-hand accounts of the reign of terror and the war crimes committed by the Nazis, of the
Nazi war crimes, the Wehrmacht's war of extermination in Eastern Europe, the genocide of European Jews and Sinti and Roma, persecution and resistance.
They fought for May 8 to be celebrated as the day of liberation from Nazi rule. In their tradition, we are calling today for May 8 to be celebrated - Liberation Day must become a public holiday throughout the

This commemorative event is being organized by Cologne Peace Forum, Cologne-Volgograd Town Twinning Association, Association of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime - League of Anti-Fascists (VVN-BdA).
