New art from Estonia
A special exhibition of Estonian artists from the Pallas Art Academy in Tartu: with Jaanus Eensalu, Andrus Kannel, Margus Meinart, Aet Ollisaar, Kadi Pajupuu, Sirje Petersen, Tuuli Puhvel, Anne Rudanovski and Heli Tuksam.
How can we visually interpret all the things we can only vaguely think about? The future begins with the past - a solid foundation gives us the courage to look further than the eye can see. This metaphor also encourages us to think about the temporal horizon of our own lives, which feels like something limited, although many believe that there is more beyond the horizon. There is always something more. Is that frightening or comforting? The horizon is a promise of vastness and openness, the horizontal infinity embracing the whole globe. Can or should we be able to predict what lies beyond the horizon?
The artists and teachers at the Pallas School of Art present their interpretations. Their latest works are on display. Their aim is to stimulate a discussion about the meaning and relevance of art for the future. The exhibition also shows some contradictory approaches that expand the theme through the artists' personal approaches.
The exhibition presents a variety of visual art media - painting, sculpture, photography, textile art and objects. It was curated by Aet Ollisaar and Heli Tuksam. The exhibition design was created by Madis Liplap. The exhibition is supported by Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu.
"Depicting the Future. Variations" is a continuation of the long-standing exchange between artists from the two twin cities of Tartu and Lüneburg. In 2016, an exhibition of Pallas artists took place in Lüneburg (curated by Reet Pulk-Piatkowska), followed by exhibitions of Lüneburg artists in the Tartu Pallas Gallery in 2017 and 2024. In addition, several reciprocal visits, exhibitions and master classes have taken place over the years.
To coincide with this year's special exhibition of Estonian artists at the East Prussian State Museum, a parallel exhibition of Lüneburg artists entitled "Depicting the Future", which was already shown in Tartu a year ago, will open on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 5 p.m. in the Heinrich Heine House.
