A tragic comedy by Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Güllen is broke. No tax revenue and empty coffers, although the country's economy is booming: Güllen is to be seized! The longed-for salvation comes in the person of Claire Zachanassian, née Klara Wäscher, impregnated and abandoned by Alfred Ill at a young age, lost the paternity case due to false testimony, disgraced and driven out of the city as a pauper, lost her child, forced into prostitution, married and inherited a rich oil baron, now a billionaire! Now it's time: Claire Zachanassian is given a grand welcome in the hope of finding a generous benefactor in the former Güllen woman. And she is indeed willing to donate a billion to the city, but on one condition - Alfred Ill must die! Naturally, all Güllen residents are outraged and immediately reject the immoral offer in the name of humanity. But strangely, gradually there is an increased propensity to spend everywhere in the town, loans are granted generously, a new town hall is to be built, even the church can afford new bells. And Alfred Ill feels that the people of Güllen are behaving increasingly strangely towards him ...

Dürrenmatt takes the conflict between money and morality, guilt and forgiveness, hypocrisy and sincerity to the extreme. So - what can a person cost?
