In the organizer's words:

No sooner has the merchant Pantalone announced the engagement of his daughter Clarice to the doctor's son Silvio than his business partner Federigo Rasponi, who was thought to be dead, announces his arrival. The original and apparently lively fiancé is brought back into office - after all, he is a much better match for Pantalone. Hidden beneath Federigo's clothes, however, is his sister Beatrice, who urgently needs cash to support her fugitive lover. However, her newly hired servant Truffaldino is no real help to her. Truffaldino, waiting for his wages and with a growling stomach, is hired as a servant by another newly arrived gentleman without Beatrice's knowledge. This at least gives him the prospect of a double income. As the servant of two masters, he soon finds himself in increasingly complicated and absurd situations, which he tries to parry with impudence, always on the verge of overstretching himself.
