In the organizer's words:

A fragile historical moment is brought to the screen: the still young GDR looks at itself freely and non-ideologically. It is 1961 - the last months before the Wall is built. After a breakdown, Rita reflects on the events of the past years and remembers her relationship with Manfred, a chemist ten years her senior. Although they were completely different - he from the city and she from the countryside - they fell in love. He supported her professionally and together they moved to the city. While Rita found a job in the wagon construction company, Manfred failed due to the stubbornness of the officials. Their relationship began to crack. When Manfred's research was rejected without explanation, he made a momentous decision for his and Rita's lives. The film is told in flashbacks, with time jumps and breaks - an open and bold structure that remains true to the novel of the same name. The characters speak truths that can soon no longer be openly formulated. There is still room for doubt, for conflict. A movie that begins when everything is actually already over.

In an accompanying event on September 2, the author Charlotte Gneuß will read from her GDR novel Gittersee .
