Edmond Dantès, a simple sailor from a humble background, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned without trial in the notorious Château d'If, on a rocky island off the coast of Marseille. After fourteen years of imprisonment, he manages to escape, and after ten more years of preparation, he seeks revenge on the guilty parties. In the meantime, his adversaries have made a career for themselves; as bankers, barons and senior prosecutors, they belong to the best Parisian society. But Edmond Dantès is no longer the same either. He now appears as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo.

Shortly after "The Three Musketeers", "The Count of Monte Cristo" was published in 1845/46 as a serialized novel in 18 volumes and became the greatest success of the French writer Alexandre Dumas, the epitome of the adventure novel par excellence - to this day. An exciting and moving story about love and money, right and wrong, power and revenge.
