He was celebrated worldwide for his debut "Auf Erden sind wir kurz grandios", and now Ocean Vuong, the "chronicler of the American nightmare" (SZ-Magazin), is coming to the Literaturhaus München with his new novel. Hai, the nineteen-year-old queer son of Vietnamese immigrants, lives in a small town in New England. He swallows pills and contemplates suicide. Only when he meets Grazina, an eighty-two-year-old survivor of the Second World War from Lithuania, does the tide turn. As poetic as it is personal, Ocean Vuong tells of people on the margins of US society, of existential hardship and dignity at the same time. "Der Kaiser der Freude" (Hanser // Engl. by Anne-Kristin Mittag and Nikolaus Stingl) is a defiant Bildungsroman - full of empathy and quiet comedy.
