Der Mann im Tauchanzug

A man is walking his dog on the Norwegian coast and finds a diving suit - with bone remains. A case for Inspector Westermann, who hasn't been able to sleep since the case with the missing girl and drinks too much. And his clumsy trainee Magnussen. That's how TV crime dramas start. But as soon as you've made yourself comfortable, the story takes a turn.

The play follows the path of a journalist who investigates the mysterious case and undertakes a journey into the depths of repressed European realities. Her path leads to vacation resorts, ports, offices and police stations, to the jungle of Calais and chat histories full of hope and disappointment - all the way to a family whose loss never makes it into a TV thriller, because "how can you be missing if you don't officially exist?"

While the political discourse primarily names refugees and migrants collectively and describes them as an external threat, this play reconstructs one personal fate among many and thus carries out the painstaking work of regaining the human gaze. In rhythmic language, with types, role changes, digressions and false trails, the Belgian Freek Mariën questions the rules of media representation in a highly virtuoso and entertaining way.
