With the classic play "The Misanthrope", the Staatstheater Augsburg presents one of the most famous works of French stage literature. The large-scale production with its sophisticated set offers plenty of scope for contemporary audiences to identify with the play. In this passionate ensemble piece, the great emotions are dealt with on stage - including comedic entanglements in the style of classic French comedy.

Alceste feels like an outsider, hates and ridicules the society to which he belongs and which he nevertheless cannot stand. He loves Célimène, who seems to have gathered a considerable number of lovers around her. He struggles for her love - but above all for the uncompromising truth in a world full of appearance and reality.

State director André Bücker stages Molière's famous play as an ongoing party in today's world, in which reality must constantly compete with Instagram and co. and truth is interpreted as an elastic concept.

The characters of the play are consistently developed further into the present of our media society. In addition to the stage play, the Staatstheater is offering a parallel narrative thread on the internet that is independent of the production with its social network "Molusk " (a play on words from Musk and Molière) programmed by the digital division.

Since mid-October 2023, the protagonists of the play have been posting and commenting on www.molusk.de in interaction with the interested audience, thus adding a digital dimension to the stage space.
