The Pope has died unexpectedly. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is entrusted with the difficult task of presiding over the election of the new pope. Powerful cardinals from all over the world travel to Rome for the conclave. As the doors to the Sistine Chapel close, a game of power ensues.
