Tom Ripley had actually wanted to become an actor. Then the rich New York shipbuilder Greenleaf asks him to persuade his son Richard, whom Tom knows in passing, to return to the USA and join his father's company. So Tom Ripley travels to Europe. As Mr. Greenleaf has granted him a considerable financial advance, Tom delays telling him that Richard does not want to return under any circumstances. He is living with a girlfriend as a painter in an Italian fishing village - the pleasant dolce vita that Tom has been dreaming of. When Mr. Greenleaf cancels the repatriation and Tom is in danger of losing his financial basis, he implements a diabolical plan: He kills Richard, makes the body disappear into the sea and plays his part by perfectly imitating his voice, clothes, walk and signature. How long can this go on?
