When Pao Yü, scion of a powerful dynasty in ancient China, is born, he has a magic stone made of jade in his mouth and a dream in his heart. Meeting his poor cousin Lin Dai Yü changes his life. And as his life changes, so does the Middle Kingdom. A dynasty sinks around him and soon nothing is the same anymore.

Artistic ball scenes, colorful dresses, traditional dances - in Far Eastern fairy-tale scenery and picturesque imagery, Xin Peng Wang tells the most touching love story in Chinese national literature. The rise and fall of the powerful House of Kia becomes a mirror for three centuries of eventful history, from the feudal imperial era to the present day of an economic giant. Between ossified customs and hierarchies, rites and rituals, mythical sagas and inhuman present, Xin Peng Wang situates the fascinating examination of the past and present of his Far Eastern homeland and, against the background of today's China, poses the question of man's true destiny. In the end, The Dream of the Red Chamber is the last refuge for the cold and faceless society of the 21st century.

The music for this multi-layered, exotic tale full of visually stunning scenes and legends is by Academy Award winner Michael Nyman, one of the most creative and idiosyncratic composers of our time, who became world famous for the soundtracks to The Piano, Prospero's Books or Gattaca.
