"Hello? Is anyone there?"
Everything is ready for a great play with two clowns and a musician: the stage is set, the costumes are ready, the make-up is perfect! A technician quickly checks that everything is set up. But where is the audience? It was supposed to be sold out. But today everything is a little different. Who is playing the piano? Whose coffee cup is floating through the air? And which ghost is sneaking off with the extension cable? Are the actors here now, or are we just supposed to believe it? Are we really here? In "The Invisible Man", everything revolves around what you can't see. And secretly also about how nice it can be not to be seen. This production is fun for four-year-olds as well as for adult audiences. All they need is the desire to be seduced by Jetse Batelaan's magic tricks. Because if the actors claim that the audience isn't there, there's nothing they can do about it, is there? A little Las Vegas in Hanover never hurt.
You could try to describe Jetse Batelaan through the awards he has won for his work. Or by listing the festivals around the world that have shown his plays. But we don't have that much space. Nor would it make clear what an idiosyncratic artist he is and what a sensational body of work he has created in the form of plays for young people. Jetse Batelaan has been the director of Theater Artemis in the Netherlands since 2013. The productions he has created here are characterized by absurd comedy and philosophical depth that go straight to the heart of the audience. Regardless of whether they are four, twelve or 86 years old. Somewhere it was once said that he is the Monty Python of the international children's theater scene. That sums it up pretty well.
The production was originally created in 2018 at Theater Artemis with the actors Marijn Brussaard, René van 't Hof and Nimuë Walraven.
A co-production with Theater Artemis (NL)
